HOW SOCIAL MEDIA CAN STOP ADULTS LEARNING TO SWIM AND HOW TO OVERCOME THIS

23-02-2024

Social media. We can’t get away from it today. It dominates our daily lives and comes with both positive and negative elements.

I personally love social media and technology. I use it regularly to learn about new developments in the swimming world and connect with others in the industry.

While social media offers connectivity and entertainment, it also contributes to significant barriers for many adults wanting to learn how to swim.

In this blog, we'll look at the ways in which social media can prevent adults from learning to swim and how they can overcome this.

Fear amplification: One of the biggest ways social media stops adults from learning to swim is by amplifying fear. Scrolling through endless streams of content, individuals are bombarded with news stories and viral videos highlighting water-related accidents and drownings. These sensationalised stories feed into existing fears and anxieties, creating a psychological barrier for adults who may already have anxiety about water.

Comparison culture: Social media has created a culture of comparison, where individuals constantly measure themselves against others. When it comes to swimming, adults may feel intimidated by others who seem to be able to effortlessly swim. Watching videos of confident swimmers effortlessly gliding through the water can make people feel inadequate and discourage them from trying to learn to swim.

Time consumption: Another way social media interferes with adult swimming education is by consuming precious time. With endless scrolling and addictive content, individuals may find themselves spending hours on social media platforms, leaving little time for productive activities such as attending swimming lessons or practicing in the pool. The procrastination and distraction induced by social media can stop adults from prioritising starting their swimming journey.

So what are the solutions?

Mindful social media consumption: While social media presents challenges, it also offers opportunities for adults to overcome their fear of swimming. By adopting mindful consumption habits, individuals can focus on the positive aspects of social media while reducing its negative impact:

Limit screen time: Set boundaries on social media usage to free up time for taking swimming lessons. Use apps or features that track screen time and enforce limits to prevent excessive scrolling.

Curate positive content: Follow accounts and pages that promote swimming in a positive light. Seek out instructional videos, success stories, and motivational content to counterbalance the fear-inducing narratives prevalent on social media.

Join supportive communities: Engage with online communities or forums dedicated to adult swimming education. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who offer encouragement, advice on your swimming journey.

Practice mindfulness: Develop mindfulness techniques to manage anxiety and overcome fear. Practice deep breathing exercises and visualisation techniques to calm nerves before entering the water.

Take swimming lessons: Sign up for swimming classes led by friendly and experienced instructors who understand the unique challenges faced by adult learners. At Swim Max, we offer Adult Group Swimming Lessons and Adult Private Swimming Lessons in a supportive and structured learning environment that helps build confidence and competence in the water.

We believe in positively using social media. Being mindful of how much time is spent online and being part of a support community can definitely help adults overcome their fears and embark on a journey of swimming proficiency.

We can’t wait to see you in the pool.
