Learning to swim as an adult is one of the most rewarding and challenging things you can do.
It’s probably something you’ve thought about for a long time but have never actually taken the first steps to achieve this goal.
It’s OK. I understand.
It can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to juggle busy daily lives and also learn a new skill.
Remember, it's never too late to start your swimming journey.
Here are 9 things I would do if I wanted to learn to swim as an adult:
1️⃣ Start with a positive mindset: Embrace the journey with an open mind and a positive attitude. Recognise that learning to swim is a gradual process, and every small achievement is a step in the right direction.
2️⃣ Take it slow: Begin with basic water familiarisation exercises to build confidence and comfort in the water. Progress gradually through fundamental skills such as floating, kicking, and arm movements.
3️⃣ Practice consistently: Regular practice is key to mastering any skill. Set aside dedicated time each week to attend lessons and practice drills independently.
4️⃣ Stay persistent: Remember that learning to swim is a journey filled with ups and downs. Stay committed to your goal and celebrate your progress along the way.
5️⃣ Try other water activities: As well as Swimming Lessons, at Swim Max we also offer Aqua Fit sessions. These classes are a great way to stay fit and healthy as well as become more familiar with being in water.
6️⃣ Book a Private Swimming Lesson: At Swim Max the focus is solely on the one swimmer, allowing for a personalised approach to address specific needs and goals. Private lessons offer the flexibility for you to progress at your own pace.
7️⃣ Book a Group Swimming Lesson: Group swimming lessons offer an opportunity for social interaction and meeting like-minded people. Learning alongside others can be motivating and enjoyable, creating a sense of community and teamwork among swimmers.
8️⃣Book a free trial: If you’re not sure what to expect from swimming lessons and have never had one before, a free trial is an excellent way to experience time in the water with one of our experienced and friendly swimming instructors. A free trial is also a great way to see the facilities at Swim Max and ask any questions you may have. To book a free trial simply call our reception team at 061 545 454 or email swim@swimmax.ie
9️⃣ Go with a friend: If you don’t feel comfortable having a swimming lesson on your own, you can also sign up with a friend. This will be a nice way to have some moral support as you learn a new skill.
Which step will you take to start to learn to swim?
